September ended…why didn't anyone wake me up?

I really hope that Alexis Hatch reads my blog because the title of this post is just for her. :)

Okay first things firstthis weekend was transfer weekend and Sister Jin and I are staying in Corona!! I think it will be good. Actually, I know it will be. We figured out a lot this week.

Oh...the Elders are leaving! So, it will only be me and Sister Jin in the ward which will be really nice because now we have SO much work it's insane. But, I am sad to see them go. They're good missionaries and I learned a lot from them.

Well this week was "missionary week" and it was....good? Haha. We pretty much looked at it like this

We need to get the ward excited about missionary work so we are just throwing ideas at a wall and seeing which one will stick. Well, I think this week was like one of those gooey guys you get out of the quarter machines. You know...you throw them against a window and they stick for a while, but eventually fall off? Missionary week was exciting for a second and then people got "busy".

Sister Jin and I spent the ENTIRE week visiting all the active families in the ward.  Probably two families were actually participating (which were the two families already doing missionary work) but the most common response we received was "well, we were already doing missionary work and we never pass up opportunities so this week wasn't any different"…yeah, so they pretty much missed the whole point.

But that's okayit was our first attempt!

I think people really started to get it once President Smart spoke at the fireside. I love him and Sister Smart so much. They are awesome. They said everything the ward needed to hear.

My favorite part was when President said  "It is the Lord's job to prepare them, our job to find them and the missionaries job to teach them.

There it issweet and simple. All we have to do is INVITE. It doesn't need to be an official invitation and it doesn't even need to be an invitation to have the missionary discussions, just anything that will help them come closer to Jesus Christ.

Joseph Smith said:

"After all has been said, our greatest and most important duty is to preach the gospel."

and

"I made this my rule: when the Lord commands, do it."

I challenge us all to make the same rule Joseph did. We have no greater purpose as members of the church and leaders of the world than to preach the gospel. DO WORK my people!

President also challenged our ward and I am going to give you the same challengewhen you are asked to speak in church, invite 5 friends to come see you. That could be 15 non-members at church every week! And how easy is it to say "Hey, I'm speaking in my church on Sunday and I'd love for you to be there.

Even though it's not that big of a deal to us, most other churches only have their pastor speak so it will sound like a big deal to them. Will you do it? I'm telling you it doesn't have to be scary. Just do it.

Sister Jin and I taught Jesse EVERY single day this week!! And guess what!? He is getting baptized on Sunday! :) We also have a baptism on the 9th and the end of November. :):):) I guess that's what happens when you teach 34 lessons in one week. :)

I am really excited for Jesse. He is so prepared. There are a few things that we need to go over a little more and one is the priesthood. Kind of a big deal.

Yesterday one of the Elders asked him if he knew who was going to baptize him and he said "Oh I get to choose? I didn't know thatwell in that case most definetly Sister Nelson!" The elders quickly responded "Yeah that can't happen because she doesn't have the priesthood." So, we will be working on that this week. :)

The other big thing that happened this week is I taught Sister Jin how to ride a bike! It was a rough start with lots of falling, lots of bruises, a few tears and the typical knee scrape, but she got it in 3 days! I don't even have to run along side her or help her on the bike anymore. This week we will be working on getting on and off the sidewalks though. :) Im excited…it's one of my favorite parts of the day.

I love you all! You mean the world to me and I pray for you constantly. I TRULY appreciate all of the letters I got this week! I am so honored...I had no idea so many people read my blog, so thank you! :) I am going to try my hardest to write you all back.

xoxo

Ps. I don't know if this is allowed, but when it comes to eternity I think it's okay. There is the gosh dang cutest girl in my ward and last night she came up to me and said "So I hear you have a brother my age, tell me about him!" Okay, so maybe I talk up my brothers A LOT! :) Anyway, I happened to have a photo of Jack and I may have told her that he plays varsity basketball and football and maybe that he got a 32 on the ACT without a calculator :) She's a fan. Her name is Amy Saunders. Jack, you're welcome. ;)

Paranoid, awkward missionary

This past week was probably the BEST work week I've had here in Corona which was good!

We were VERY busy.

I can't remember if I told you or not, but in my first meeting with the Bishop (and the elders) I mentioned doing a "missionary week" for the entire ward (not just the youth like we did in our home ward). Bishop liked the idea, but wanted to see an outline so I typed one up and met with the elders to get everything organized and figured out exactly what we wanted the ward to do.

It's taken a couple of weeks but we kicked it off yesterday!! I honestly think it will be great. I told Bishop that this may not be the thing that gets the ward excited about missionary work, but if we get one solid refferral out of it, that's one more than we are getting now so that sounds like success to me!!

I think it will be much better than that though. :)

We are ending the week with a fireside and President Smart is going to speak at it which will be AWESOME

It has sort of turned into a "thing".  Apparently, the Bishop told the Stake President about it and then he asked Bishop to present it in a meeting and gave all of the bishops a copy of my chart.

We are all excited to see how it turns out, but I'm feeling a little pressure. I am really praying that this will go as planned.

Sister Jin and I had our first really exciting experience and of course, it was to humble me. :)

I am pretty sure I've said this before, but I do not have a testimony of tracting. I have never seen success come from it, it puts everyone in a bad mood really quick, and I would rather do something more productive like get referrals from members.

Sister Jin really wanted to tract one day and instead of fighting it like the 5 times before I said "okay, but only one street."

We parked at the bottom of the street and started to make our way up.

Most people were not answering their door or when they did, they would say "no thanks" before we could even say "hi". (We did knock on a couple of JDubs doors which is always fun.)

Finally, we got to the 3rd to last door on the street and a young man answered the door and was very happy.  He expressed his love for our Savior and practically BEGGED for a blessing.

We scheduled to go back the next night.

We were excited because the only other blessing we have given was the first week I was here.

We went back the next night and Sister Jin left an AWESOME blessing (her english has gotten so much better) and the spirit was really strong. After the blessing, we talked to him about the Book of Mormon and invited him to read and pray.  He agreed which left the door open for me to invite him to be baptized, which he also agreed he would do once he knows the church is true!

We were SO happy! :)

Sister Jin then invited him to church and he was really excited about it. We had our ward mission leader pick him up and he stayed for ALL THREE meetings!

Since I've been on my mission I have realized that not everyone who wants to meet with us has the right intentions...if you know what I mean?

That was something that we were a little worried about with Jesse, but we were just excited to have someone come to church.

He ended up sitting between us which was weird and awkward...I don't really know how that happened. Anyway, he was quite friendly to me and sat RIGHT next to me. I try not to think into anything like that though because I can't tell if I am just a paranoid, awkward missionary or if I'm getting the vibes.

Luckily, if he started with the wrong intentions I think he has the right ones after going to church.

He asked some basic questions like, "why don't we believe in the trinity?" and then he asked if he could participate in missionary week too! I don't really know how that works with non-members, but I was all for it because he took ALL of the materials home with him!

We are teaching him about the Restoration tonight and we're quite excited about it. :)

I have a good feeling about him and Sister Jin said that as she was leaving the blessing she felt like he was going to serve a mission. He is 22 so we need to get to work! :)

Oh I almost forgot...

I GOT TO GO BACK TO EASTVALE THIS WEEK!!!!!!

We had multi-zones so I was able to see all of my homies! It was seriously so fun.

Elder Snyder was late to the meeting, but when he saw me (in the chapel) he ran over and gave me the biggest...handshake. (We served together my entire time in Eastvale.)

Everyone was staring so it was a tad awkward, but I was too happy to care.

"Elder Snyder is going home in December so this is the last time I will see him"

Sister Anderson and I had quite the embrace. :) It made me really miss her though. We were inseperable for the whole two hours. She is my bestie for life.

"Love her longtime"

"Sister Jin and I throwing up the peace sign...naturally"

"We have the largest zone"

"My babies" (Editor: I don't know why it won't let me rotate the pics this week)

"Love Sister Todd...my comp from MTC"
"Elder Synder and Elder Schoonmaker messing with my camera"

I love you all and was SO HAPPY to get a package from the primary! It truly warmed my soul. :)

Clocked in a solid 100 miles

Okay my people....this week was not so great.

It was possibly the WORST week of my mission. And I say that because our weekly numbers were really rough.

I've never seen so many zeros...

But, some of the elders accidently sent us their numbers and then I didn't feel so bad...a blessing in disguise. :)

I can't even say the work is slow because it's practically non-existent.

So, I told Sister Jin we needed to do a big clean up! We went through the ward list and visited every family that we didn't have any information on. Tuesday we went to 40 different houses! Clocked in a solid 100 miles that day.

It was good information, but not a SINGLE person allowed us into their home. A few people got put on DNC (do not contact) list, some had moved and there were even a couple that gave fake addresses...weirdos.

Luckily, the highlight of the week by FAR was conference. Goodness. I love conference so stinkin' much!! I can't say it was the worst week of my mission when conference was so AMAZING!

"We watched conference at the church and it was just us missionaries"

Every single one of my prayers was answered.

We are so blessed to be able to hear from the prophet and apostles! I loved how President Eyring opened with telling us how topics are not assigned and that each of them ponders, prays and fasts on what they should speak on.

The coolest part is that missionary work was a HUGE theme!! I feel so blessed to be a missionary during this time.

All the talks about member missionaries were such a blessing. It's so important that wards are helping the full time missionaries with the work. We have been commanded to do so, if we aren't we are breaking our baptismal covenants. Pretty important stuff if you ask me. :)

Elder Holland's talk was fantastic. SO much love. Christlike love.

I encourage you all to read and study the talks.

They will soften your heart.

They will comfort you.

They will guide you.

You will receive answers to your prayers and know what Heavenly Father needs from you.

Love you all! Sorry this is so short. I'll send a much better email next week!

Dinner at a members home after conference

"Maybe this is why our numbers were low?"

Go do work my friends...

Well this is no bueno!

Corona has been really tough lately. We are BARELY teaching lessons.

It's been hard and it's definitely getting to me.

But, last week we were blessed to hear from Elder Richards of the seventy. It was awesome! He spoke to us for 4 hours straight and we were all just writing as fast as we possibly could.  He said some things that whether he knew it or not, were meant specifically for me.

He stood in front of all of us and said "Did you know that you can measure your faith?

We said "yes" and he said "Oh really? How? How can we measure our faith?

Everyone was too nervous to say the wrong answer so it was quiet for a while and then someone stood up (we always stand when we have been called on to speak) and says "by our commitment to our Savior.

That's what we were all thinking....weren't you?

Then Elder Richards said "No. Faith is not measured by our commitment, but by our actions.

I thought about that for a minute...especially my actions over the past week. Have they shown my faith? Did I rely on Heavenly Father to guide me and did I trust the path that he laid out for me? Or am I sometimes too proud? Maybe not intentionally, but do I always follow promptings I receive?

Sadly, I could not say that I had followed every prompting.

I continued to think about it all week and strived to follow every prompting. Sometimes it's hard to discern between my thoughts and the ones the Lord put there, but then I realized that if I pray to recognize the promptings from the Holy Ghost then I must follow ALL of them because they all come from Him.

One day this week, Sister Jin and I could not find anyone to teach. We literally had our ward list and binder of formers and were visiting everyone we could think of.

We were almost to a members home when the thought came to me "What about Rose Carter?". She is an older lady that is a dry Mormon and the Bishop asked us a few weeks ago to meet with her. We visited MULTIPLE times and even left her a note one day, but have never been able to talk to her.

I am hesitant to continue trying to get into homes of those we have left notes with that didn't respond. There are A LOT of people here that are less active because they were offended by missionaries.

Personally, I think that's a ridiculous reason to stop going to church, but I still don't want to be one of those missionaries.

I asked Sister Jin if she thought it was a good idea to visit Rose and she had the same hesitation. I then felt like we needed to call Bishop and see if he had her phone number so that we could call her first.

The second we called him he said "Yes! I just got off the phone with her son-in-law. He said that she is home right now...I was just going to call her!

We told him that we were really close (a block away) and that we could just go visit her instead.

We turned down the street to go to her house and she had literally just pulled into her garage. Sister Jin tried to get her attention before she shut the garage door, but she didn't hear her.

We quickly went over to knock on the door and she answered, happy as can be, saying "Oh sisters, please come in! I just walked through the door and am only here to pick up my mail before I leave again. You caught me at the perfect time!"

We went inside her sweet home. She looks like she's mormon. She decorates like an older, single member and she even smells Mormon. Weird, but you all know what I mean.

We asked about her story and she said that her daughter and son-in-law are members (her son was just released as Bishop) and they live in Newport, Ca. They are about to have a baby and since the weather is so much nicer there, she is living with them all summer and won't be back in Corona until the beginning of November.

She comes back once a week for a few minutes to get her mail and to check on the house.

She was in a hurry to leave so we left a spiritual thought and right before we walked out I said "You said that you are ready to become a member... have you thought about a date for baptism?

She said "I've been talking to my son-in-law, but I haven't exactly decided yet.

I said "Okay, well let's set a goal that we can work towards so we can hit the ground running when you get back. Since you will be home the beginning of November, how about you get baptized at the end of the month?

She said "Sure...that sounds great! I am so exctied to get to know you girls and learn from you!"

We left on cloud nine! How crazy is that? The quiet simple promptings of the spirit lead us to life changing events.

I am so grateful for the gift of the Holy Ghost and the blessing He is to my life.

Elder Robbins, serving in the Corona ward with me, bore his testimony yesterday and shared a poem. I really loved it.

It goes something like this:

Believe and be saved the minister said,
Believe and be saved and rise from the dead.
Through grace ye are saved from sin and from hell,
So simply believe and all will be well.
The preacher continued and read from the book,
How all can reach heaven, both angel and crook.
When all had been said and the church recessed;
With money collected and everyone blessed;
The preacher retired to his spacious new home,
In his humble Mercedes all covered in chrome.
He sat in his study, his thoughts running deep,
He dozed for a moment, and died in his sleep.
He ran to Saint Peter and wearing a grin,
Said "I believe in the Savior, so please let me in"
"Oh no, not another", said Peter with a sigh,
"Satan's sure working, the tolls running high."
The preacher looked puzzled, then saw in a flash,
God's plan for salvation, beginning at last.
Believing is nothing, if nothing is done.
In getting to Heaven you follow the Son.
To follow a leader, you do what is said,
Faith without works is nothing but dead.
Satan knows Jesus, believes in him too.
So what's the difference between Satan and You?
Believe in the Savior, but always recall,
Faith is important, but sure isn't all.

So go do work my friends!! Be done with lesser things! And rise up! (Thanks Dad :)

Love and miss you all SO much!

Momma, this one's for you...

So I love it here in Corona!!

Sister Jin and I get a long quite well. She is adorable and she knows it.

She calls herself "The Riverside Cutie". Totes presh (totally precious) and I love her.

She is from Seoul, South Korea and went to BYU-Hawaii for a year before she left on her mission.

President and Sister Smart with Sister Jin. Sister Jin brought them Hanbok,
which is traditional Korean dress.

We are living with the Boyce family and I LOVE them! They are so awesome!!

The first day Brother Boyce left a talk on my desk that Elder Holland gave in the Brazil MTC in 2000 titled "The Miracle of a Mission". IT. IS. THE. BEST! Jennie should send it to Nelson. I cried through the whole thing. I love that man.

Goodness I am full of love today.

There is only one bummer part about Corona...the work seems to be slow. At least in the Corona ward. When I arrived here, we had ZERO investigators. Not even a single potenial. Rough sauce.

So, Sister Jin and I have been searching for investigators ALL week. We were so busy going through the area book, visiting formers and spliting our area (we now have two sets of missionaries in the ward so we only cover the west side) as well as visiting less actives and part member families, etc.

So as far as the work goes, this week wasn't the best, but Sister Jin and I had some REALLY funny moments.

Since she only moved to the states from Korea a year ago, she still has a heavy accent when she speaks.

For example...when I first got here, she sat me down in our room and said "what are your rules?

I said "what do you mean?

She responded "like what do you hate?

I laughed and told her that I was pretty easy going and I couldn't think of anything.

Then I asked her the same question...

She said "I have two rules. One, I hate faarting

I had a big smile on my face and said "Um, what?

She said "faarting...ffaaarrttiinng

I started to giggle and then she said "F-L-I-R-T-I-N-G

I said "ohhhhhh haha okay I promise I wont flirt and I'll try not to fart!

She didn't exactly get how funny it was. :)

I love her so stinkin' much. She is such a great missionary, a very hard worker. I can't wait to see how this transfer goes.

Last night we were able to teach a girl named Laura. She is 23 and really good friends with our homeshares. She dated their son and now he is on his mission, but she still comes over twice a week.

She has been coming to church for over a year and this past January she really started to consider baptism. She ended up setting a baptismal date for January 2014.

We decided to show her the "Choose this Day" mormon message. She loved it, but still had some concerns.

Her mom is not the biggest fan and has the normal issues of not being able to attend her wedding, saying that it will change their relationship, that she is being brained washed and doesn't really know what she is doing.

I said "Laura, I am really glad that you told me that because I already have so much love for you, but I have a story that I feel like you need to hear

Then I went on to tell her about your conversion story, mom.

Now just a little side note: I was really homesick yesterday. Actually, really momsick.

The only times I really get homesick is during sacrament meeting and yesterday the topic was "honor your father and mother" but everyone mostly talked about their moms and how grateful they were for the sacrifices that their mothers made.

So mom, I am beyond grateful for you. I honestly don't think I will ever be able to express how much love and gratitude I have for you. I could not ask for a better mom. I look up to you in every way. Thank you for all that you do.

I went on to tell Laura about how you wanted to be baptized and that everyone thought you were doing it for dad, but to show that you weren't, you didn't invite him or his family to your baptism. I told her how none of your relaionships changed and in the long run it was okay that none of your family was able to attend your sealing and that you all remained very close, if not closer because of your decision to be baptized.

I said "Laura, I know that Heavenly Father has many blessings waiting for you that he cannot give you until you are baptized. I also know that your baptism will bless the lives of thousands of people.

Do you know how I know that?

I know it because of my mom...because I am one of those people. I am a direct result of her decision to be baptized. If she hadn't made that choice, I would not be here. I am so grateful for my mom. I am so grateful for her faith and her love of the Savior. It has blessed her life, it has blessed my life and now it is blessing your life."

I was very emotional (I still am), Sister Boyce was emotional and even Laura was emotional.

It was VERY powerful and Laura committed to choosing a sooner date.

Mom, thank you so much for the example you still are to me today. I truly do get emotional every time I think about your decision to be baptized.

I am so grateful that not only did you make that decision, but you remained faithful. You raised me and the boys in the ways we should go and always lead us down the right path.

I hope that one day I can be the mom to my children that you have been to me. I love you. You are my best friend.

I love this gospel. I love my Savior. I love all of you.

Email from Natalie's former Bishop:

Hello Nelson Family,

I just wanted to take some time to thank you for having raised such an amazing daughter.  We have had the privilege of having Sister Nelson with us in the Eastvale 1st Ward for the last couple of months and she has been a blessing to so many.  We were all so impressed with her diligence and maturity in leading the Sister Missionaries in our ward.  Her devotion to the Gospel of Jesus Christ is evident in the way she brings the Spirit when she is in our home and when she teaches.

We will miss her now that she has been transferred, but know that she will find great success as she continues to share her wonderful spirit with those she finds.

Thank you again for sending such a wonderful Sister into the mission field!

Best regards,

Bishop Eric Loudon

Onward to Corona!

Okay.

I honestly don't have very much "missionary work" to write about because it was the last week of the transfer so we had a lot of meetings and activities.

Let's go through the week shall we?

Tuesday: I can't remember.... haha maybe this wasn't a good idea.

Wednesday: We had a Trainer/Trainee meeting so we got to see Sister Packkkkkkkkkkk!!!! It was so much fun :) She is doing great things in Hemet. She was so excited to see us. We were giddy, chatty missionaries the WHOLE time.

"Reunited at last!"

She said some REALLY funny things. She was asking us about Sister Buckwalter (our homeshare) and Muffy (her tiny dog, who is her child) and we were telling her how she is dog sitting so there are two dogs in the house.

Sister Pack turns to us and says "there were two dogs when I was there

Sister Anderson and I were confused because the new dog just got here this week and once she realized we weren't catching on she goes "Yeah muffy and me"...hahaha she HILARIOUS!

Miss her to pieces.

More old friends reunited:
Sister Todd (Nat's mtc companion), Sis Anderson, Sister Pack, Nat and Sister Gambling

Thursday: We had our last weekly planning session together....it was a short one. I honestly can't remember anything special about thursday either...

Friday: My FAVORITE day of the week. We were able to go to the temple!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

"Wesley's friend from BYU, Elder Schoonmaker, just arrived from the MTC a few weeks ago and is serving in my ward. He's one of the mandarin speaking Elders. We were twinsies for the temple trip."

I love the temple so, so, SO much!

My favorite place in the whole world let me tell ya. It was exactly what I needed (isn't it always?)

I love the new improvements! It made it so personal for me and so much more realistic. Our life here on earth is such a blessing. We need to show our gratitude through fulfilling our purpose. Not just magnifying our callings or even fulfilling our purpose as missionaries, but as children of God.

We arrived at the temple an hour and a half early (us missionaries really like to be prepared or something) so we were able to do initiatories before the session. I have really been thinking about the covenants that I have made with my Heavenly Father and if I am striving to keep up my end of the "deal" every day.

For example, we covenant at baptism to keep God's commandments and to remember Him always and if we do that, along with other things, He will pour His spirit upon us and give us the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Sometimes I forget that I covenanted that I would do that ALWAYS, not just when it's convenient.

Just because I have received the gift of the Holy Ghost does not me that I have Him with me always. It's dependent on if I am doing what I promised I would.

The temple always puts that into perspective for me. I need to do all that has been asked of me so that I am prepared for whatever Heavenly Father has in store for me today, tomorrow, next year or after this life.

Saturday: Transfers. I hate transfer Saturdays. We can get a call from President at anytime during the day. President will call for leadership positions like training or Distict Leader or Sister Training Leader, but if you are just simply being transferred, you find out Saturday night from your Zone Leaders.

That morning we had ZTM (zone training meeting) which was AWESOME!!

For our training our ZL's blindfolded all of us and lead us into the chapel. We were supposed to put ourselves in the shoes of our investigators and remember what it was like when we felt the spirit for the first time.

Once we entered the chapel there were hymns playing and then once everyone was seated we listened to a segment from one of the church vidoes of Christ when he suffered the atonement.

The spirit was so strong and confirmed to me again why I am here. It truly is to invite people to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost and enduring to the end.

After that we went out to lunch with the 2nd ward sisters which is when THEY got their call from President! They are both staying in Eastvale and Sister Todd is training another new missionary! She will serve 1/3 of her mission here which is crazy.

We hurried and checked our phone, but we had nothing!

After dinner, nothing!

President normally calls by zone so we were just waiting for the ZL's to call...

FINALLY, at 9:30 PM President calls!

I answered and he said "well, I'm calling because it's transfer weekend" (he always says that which we all think is funny because it's not like we don't know that)

Then he told me that I am getting transferred to Corona!!

It's only about 20 minutes away, but I hear great things about it and I'll be in a car. :)

I will be companions with Sister Jin! :) She is a Korean sister that came out a little before Sister Anderson. I already know her because we served in the same stake for a transfer. She is a hoot! I am SO excited.  I should have some funny stories next week.

President then told me that he is really proud of the work I've done in Eastvale and that the Lord needs me to carry that to Corona....

That might be the nicest thing I have ever heard. I love President.

I am so grateful to be here!! I have to go so I can send lots of pictures!!

Peace and blessings,

Sister Nelson

PS. I love and miss you all like crazy!
